A ride on the NH Ice Cream Trail to Hayward's Ice Cream, Nashua, NH. Ride begins and ends at Lincoln Park, Manchester. Leaving the Park for Rt 130, note the Triangular manhole covers! Nashua, NH is one of only a few places in the world to routinely use Triangular manhole covers. The Triangle and the Circle are the only shapes that can be used for covers that won't fall into the hole they cover. Sadly, the Foundry that made the covers for years is out of business, and Overseas Foundries refuse to make Triangular covers. So, Nashua replaces the Triangles with circles when needed for repair or when a cover goes missing as many did during the recent economic slow down.... soon these bits of history will be gone. Moving on - it's a fine ride to the Nashua River Rail Trail, and down it to Pepperell, MA. There are repair tools and a pump at a fixit station by the trail. On the way back up the trail into NH, note the enterprising water hole by the side of the trail. The foundry may be gone, but enterprise continues! Re-entering NH, ride to the fine parking area on Gilson Road. From there it's a more and more urban ride to Hayward's Ice Cream. After Hayward's head straight into the city on the main drag. Beware the urban traffic. Turning onto the Nashua Heritage Rail trail brings you onto a good example of an urban rail trail struggling to show that these things can bring something more to the city. I hope they continue on trying, and connect to the trails at Mine Falls park. The connection now is a bit harsh riding over the car-centric Rt 3. (though perhaps there was a way I didn't take...) Working your way around a mysteriously locked gate behind the high school, which did nothing more than cause me to ride off the nice paved trail to get around it, enter Mine Falls Park. Mine Falls has lots of nice trails, some paved, some not, check it out. Mine Falls Park is not Lincoln Park. To get back to Lincoln Park, ride through Mine Falls on paved trails and over a fine bridge, and back to the parking lot at Lincoln Park. Remember: there is no poop fairy.
