HIKE REPORT
Wednesday, 20 March 2024, Farrar Pond spring hike
Hike Leader: Marie Keutmann, 617 312 4739, marie.keutmann@gmail.com
~4 miles, 10:00 am start from Lincoln, MA
Hikers (15): Marie, Annemarie Altman, Barbara Jacobs, Betty Salzberg, George Stromberg, Jack Mroczkowski, Kristina Leclaire, Lynell Stromberg, , Marlene Heroux, Melissa Norton, Mike Hanauer, Peggy Gelin, Phyllis Evan, Susan Sabin, and Ted Nyder.
Marie led fourteen hikers along scenic Farrar Pond. We took two detours: one to look at numerous kettle holes, and another to look at a waterfall in a stream that empties into the pond. Kettle holes are formed by blocks of dead ice left behind by retreating glaciers. The ice becomes buried in sediment and, when it melts, it leaves a depression called a kettle hole.
Approximately ten hikers had lunch in the greenhouse at Verrill Farm, a few miles away in Concord.

HIKE ANNOUNCEMENT
Wednesday, 27 March 2024, October Farm spring hike
Hike Leader: Jack Mroczkowski, 781 862 1019 (landline), 781 640 6405 (cell - on day of hike only), JAM000705@gmail.com
4+ miles, 10:00 am start from ~260 Balls Hill Road, Concord, MA
Description: This is an eclectic hike with many different scenes: Concord River, ponds, trees, and winding paths. Our walk will include crossing into Brewster Woods. Mr. Brewster lived here over 100 years ago. He was the founder of the Audubon society. There are three small hills I always like to climb, but they can be avoided by taking a parallel flat path within sight of the hill-walkers.
No post-hike LUNCH has been planned, but the option can be explored after the hike.
NOTE: Hikers must register on the member app or at https://www.crw.org/rides-calendar , as if they were riders.
Directions and parking: Most people will have to drive through Concord to get onto Monument Street. Balls Hill Road is roughly two miles out on Monument Street, on the right. Note that it is easy to miss the turn off onto Balls Hill Road, so drive slowly. After turning into Balls Hill Road, it is another ~1/4 mile plus to the end of the road where there are two parking lots.
Rain cancels. Check your INBOX on Wednesday, after 8:00 am, for a possible cancellation message.

Best format for turn-by-turn directions on modern Garmin Edge Devices
Best format for turn by turn directions on Edge 500, 510. Will provide true turn by turn navigation on Edge 800, 810, 1000, Touring including custom cue entries. Great for training when we release those features. Not currently optimal for Virtual Partner.
Useful for uploading your activity to another service, keeping records on your own computer etc.
Useful for any GPS unit. Contains no cuesheet entries, only track information (breadcrumb trail). Will provide turn by turn directions (true navigation) on the Edge 705/800/810/1000/Touring, but will not have any custom cues. Works great for Mio Cyclo. Find GPS specific help in our help system.

Estimated Time shows a prediction of how long it would take you to ride a given route. This number is based on your recent riding history, and represents an estimate of moving time. Each time you upload a new ride, your Estimated Time profile will adjust to reflect your most recent riding. Only rides exceeding 10 miles (16 km) will affect these estimates.
