A ride on the NH Ice Cream Trail to Beech Hill Farm and Ice Cream Barn, Hopkinton and Granite State Candies & Ice Cream, Concord, NH. Ride begins and ends at a trailhead parking area of the Society for the Protection of NH Forests on Portsmouth Street Concord. Just down the road from the SPNHF Conservation Center HQ building and parking area (which may be open for "facilities"). You're off to a good start if you begin at the end, of the First NH Turnpike, and along the NH Heritage Trail. Head N. on Rt 132, to cross the mighty Merrimack River at Sewalls Falls Bridge. There is a nice Fish & Game boat access here. Further along stop in at the Contoocook River Canoe river access, maybe take a short paddle. Did you see that? Then on to the Barn/Farm, the first of two ice cream stops, only get the kiddie size! The corn barn holds a nice bike. Riding on, cross Rt89 and following the Bike Route signs, ride on Farrington Corner Rd to Stickney Hill Rd. The roads end, and a paved bike path begins, with a bridge over a water feature connecting the turkey ponds. Some maps show that at the end of the bridge you might pass back under Rt89 back to Dunbarton Rd. I didn't venture down the single track unpaved trail under the highway. Further on find an official looking tunnel that might bring you back to the other side of Rt89 too. I didn't follow the lightly used path through the woods to find out. Instead continuing on towards the NH Audubon McLane Center. I've stopped in here before to ask about the bike trail nearby: where it was connecting to overall, how it was built, when, etc. they claimed not to know of it. I think the bike path was built around the time of Rt89 in general, as appeasement for cutting things off in the area with the impassable Rt89. A few years ago the state published extensive detailed paper maps (this was before the internet really) of bike-able ways in NH. These mysterious paved trails along Rt89 appear nowhere on them, again I think because they are Fed money funded.... anyway they are there, but don't appear to be promoted or connected to anything else. Into the big City, Concord. The State Capital and the Capitol building. Filled with history. And Dragon bikes, and bikes that have been left in one place too long. And Granite State Candies and Ice Cream near Bicentennial Square, a nice place to sit to eat the ice cream. After ice cream, visit a Rocket. The McAuliffe Planetarium and Discovery Center are on the campus of NHTI. Find the pedestrian path along side Rt93 as it bridges the Merrimack River, just near the edge of Campus, near the end of the Delta Drive bridge that crossed Rt93. You're back.
