I didn't have to leave as early as usual for this ride due to having only one relatively short section of busy highway to do at the start, 54 to Luthersville. The day started out cool-ish, so I put on ear warmers, arm and knee warmers and full finger gloves. But it fluctuated wildly depending on where I went, between 53 and 47 degrees so I was either comfortable or a little warm. Once the sun rose the temperature climbed really fast. It topped out in the mid eighties, which is an insane temperature swing. I definitely am not used to heat yet so this felt much warmer than it may seem from just looking at numbers. It would be cool by summer standards but sweltering by mid April standards.
I enjoyed the climb up to the Visitor's Center on Pine Mountain, and really enjoyed the short descent down to the campground. Haven't done these in a long while. Was still feeling good and was eating and drinking properly up to this point, plus I filled my bottles at the faucet beside 354 in the park, so I decided to push on to Hamilton for my first stop at around 100 miles. Winds were pretty light and while warm, it wasn't too bad. I really enjoyed riding the Man O War trail for the first time. It was just so cool to be able to climb up and over the mountain on a completely separated path. When I got to Hamilton I decided go ride the 1 mile highway out and back to use the Dollar General for my first stop.
This route was pretty highway heavy, mostly relatively quiet 2 lane country ones though. I had to ride GA 116 and 103 for a good long while, crossing I-185 in the process. At some point I found a phone laying in the shoulder and grabbed it. It did seem to be working but the battery was dead. Interestingly it was a Motorola, and a newer version than the one I use currently. Almost always if I find a phone it's just another Iphone.
Despite all the highways there were lots of gravel roads too, a lot of which percentage wise were dead end country subdivisions. Had no issues with riding to the end of all the roads I planned. Most interesting thing was in Whitesville a very old series of 3 streets off the main road, at the end of one was an abandoned school that looked to be from the fifties or sixties. Definitely designed with air conditioning in mind(low ceilings), with brick exterior and basically zero parking. Saw lots of cool old pre air conditioning houses in random spots throughout the country, including lots of abandoned ones.
I stopped for the second time in Whitesville at the Dollar General. I worked my way northeast with a pretty strong tailwind. Which was nice to have but it made the heat even more difficult to deal with especially climbing hills. But I made great progress. Rolled up to the tiny ghost town of Stovall and arrived just in time to have to wait on a train hauling cars. But this didn't last long, and I found some shade on a side street and ate and drank some.
Eventually after the very long Stovall road was over I was in Greenville again, stopped for some water and a soda at the Dollar General and continued north on the very familiar Rocky Mount road. This time completely in the daylight. I was making such good time I had it fairly secured that I could finish before sunset. I took a bit of a diversion from my usual by avoiding Luther Bailey road and going up to Rockhouse road, and winding through the west part of Senoia. I really liked this much better. Seems less busy and it was way less hilly.
I felt really good the last half of this ride probably due to good pacing the first half. I decided to ride Dividend Dr instead of the paths, and had the energy to sprint up to the railroad tracks on Paschall road. Felt pretty good at the end although I was definitely not drinking enough and was a little dehydrated.
