Thursday
The night spent sleeping in the concrete baseball dugout went better than I expected. There were storms but nothing crazy for several hours and I got some decent sleep till I was wakened around 3am and some severe storms passed over. I had to scramble to secure the rain cover over the tent but after I got it up and the storms settled down a bit, I got some more good sleep till 5:50. There was a lull in the rain so I did my morning constitutional. Packed everything up as the last few thunderstorms were finishing up.
I hoisted the bike over the little fence to try to avoid making tracks everywhere and saw that there was a cop sitting at the edge of the park where it meets the street. I kind of went around him a bit by taking the RV camping alley(there were only two campers there and it wasn't big) and this was fine. I rolled down the side streets of Collinwood to get back to my route, and in the process I picked up a dagger of a shard of glass in my rear tire, in the bead. I very quickly plugged it and found a small park. In the center of town to pump a bit more air in.
I had gotten a bit tired of waiting till 8 to leave so I could use a store as the next would be more than 50 miles. So instead I decided to just go and divert very slightly off route to go through the next town north, Waynesboro.
I found my way easily and even got church water. Grabbed a lot of stuff at the Piggly Wiggly. Got back on route via some steep roads. This would be the theme of the day.
So it was, up a holler, down a holler. All the rain from the storm the previous night made the gravel roads more bumpy and unpredictable with all the washouts. But it wasn't too bad.
Around midday I stopped in the town of Linden, at a downtown grocery store. Prepared for the heat of the day and got yet more snacks because I'm voracious by this point. Despite the storms pushing a front through, it was still really warm, mid eighties again. Although maybe the humidity was lower because it didn't feel as bad as the previous days.
I had set my sights on just past the next store and I got a bit tired and ready to stop in this section. But I plugged along slowly, up and down each step hill.
The whole day was filled with wonderful sights to see. Endless dense forest, flowing streams everywhere, twisty winding and narrow hilly roads. Lots of pasture goats, sheep, mostly cattle. Not very many houses. Definitely the hilliest day.
The last store was a little convenience store plus deli plus bakery plus burger shop. Plus gas station. I felt real out of place there. Was out of water and was hoping for a gallon jug but all they had was little bottles. I grabbed two Gatorades, two waters, snacks and got going.
Headed down the route again, up a steep gravel hill again, down the other side. I was looking for a cemetery that was on the map but I was stopped cold by a large river ford that was too high and fast to cross at all.
I backtracked and intended to go to a church I had already passed and camp behind it. At the time I moved on because the sun was still hot and I didn't want to sit in the heat. But before I got there I passed a cemetery on a hill surrounded by pasture that I missed before. It's far and high enough from the road that it's pretty secluded. Not a bad campsite. Sunset was kinda pretty.
