Today's ride was all about testing my right calf. I did exactly as I planned. I rode and made some mental notes where things went wrong. There were really two things. First, as I was going through OTR, a bush got caught in my rear derailleur. I had to dismount to get it out. It took a few minutes to remove the shrubbery. There was a little piece that I couldn't get out, but it didn't look like it was going to do any hard. It was wedged in the upper pulley. I haven't checked it since I got back. After that, it was keeping mental notes on the next bad thing, which of course, was my calf muscle cramping. Everything went good all the way to the top of Banducci. Up until then I did modest tempo, but never crawling. I was doing good average time. As soon as I made it to the Summit of Banducci, I felt a hint of cramping in my right leg. I had no problems on the descent, but after that point, my leg started to cramp every 10 minutes or so. It was the worse when I lifted the pace and then slowed down. Something about that violent change in power caused my leg to cramp. Everytime it tightened up, I just let off the gas and waited till it passed. I wasn't exactly limping home, but I was also not able to do anything above modest tempo. I got my knee warmers and tried them today. It proved to be perfect given that it was in the 50's today. I leg would have been worse off had I not used them, no doubt. Leg cramping aside, that was my only ailment today. As for the Spooktacular ride, it doesn't look good. I'll have to keep an eye on my leg to see if it heals in time. My concentration as focused on my one ailment, trying to keep it mitigated and free from excess cramping. Balance was surprisingly good, considering. I didn't do any digs at any points in the ride, no surprise there. Other notes, I think I saw a baby deer just as I was making a right turn onto the Banducci wall. It was hard to tell from the distance. I may have caught a glimpse of it on my gopro. There was one cyclist who was going the opposite direction at the same point. We ended up crossing paths again on the other side of the mountain, in the farmlands. That's a rarity. Bike gear is working perfectly, no problems there.
