There’s something profound about participating in the unadulterated gravitational laws that govern our universe. This 4 mile, non-stop, downhill flow line begins at the University Medical Center (the last stop of Red Line Trax) and takes you on a no-brakes coasting cruise down into the heart of downtown. The line capitalizes on the tantalizing 3% downhill grade of the University's car-less campus. It bob's & weaves, arcs & bends, and we're certain that the simplicity of coasting downhill, using nothing but air resistance and friction to regulate your speed, will have you feeling like a kid again.
Ideal bike: hardtail mtn bike. Rigid gravel bike and full suspension mtn bikes great too. Road bikes are okay, sufficient, but not ideal for this flow line.
Surfaces: concrete (streets and sidewalks)
Difficulty: intermediate (blue square). To simply ride it is easy (green circle, anyone can). To find flow on it takes an experienced and advanced rider (black diamond).
Ideal group size: 1 - 4 riders.
Time: ride takes roughly 30 minutes.
Ideal pace: no brakes, no pedals (it's a challenge!!). This means that sometimes you'll be going up to 25 mph, and sometimes as slow as 2 mph. Go with the flow baby!
Traffic: on-campus there is minimal vehicle traffic but there are a couple road crossing to be wary of, and be respectful to other pedestrians. Once off of campus the traffic increases to moderate. Always ride right and defensively.
Best time of day to ride: in the mornings or evening's when traffic is slower.
Best season: year round. Although summer's are great b/c no students and winters are great because this line gives the feling of mtn biking when the rest of the trails are all snowy and wet!
Downsides: there are a couple busy intersection crossings, and much of the route is on campus side walks (no true bike infrastructure).
Upsides: great views of the valley, especially at Primary Childrens Hospital.
Bonus: on the edges of the line, look for features (drops, jumps, whoopdies, skinnies) and feel free to improvise. All of campus is a flowfactory mecca!
Double bonus: Red Line Trax delivers you straight to the top of the line, no climbing (unless you're into that sort of thing).
Encouragement: find creativity in your line and improvise along the way. The less braking and the less pedaling the better!
