This was #0093 Bartlett Lake, ridden backward like BWD2 route. Started at 3:30am, since the last time I started at 4am and it got hot then and today was even hotter. Decided to ride this as training for end of month Denver 1200k High Country. I needed some hills.
Started from McDs as usual. I am used to and enjoying the quiet time of that start. It was actually a bit cool at times. Not much traffic on Deer Valley. It was great and sad riding today.
I like that weaving through the neigbhorhoods around mile 30 - 35.
Turns out I arrived at top of 9 mile Control at same time as last year but left a couple minutes later, a bathroom stop.
I took a detour around mile 50 and cut east to N Boulder View Dr. Finally got up to towers. Stopped to refill water at water fountain outside of ranger station. Then down the hill I went.
Then around mile 2 the burned areas started appearing. I had forgotten about hearing about this. The burned area continued to mil 8. The smell was there of burnt. The fire must not have been that hot since many bigger vegetation items seemed to still be alive.
Arrived at the bottom at 8:35am but store does not open until 9am. So just turned around and started the climb out. I made it to the water fountain at 1018. So I thought I was 10 minutes faster to this point than on my June 2 ride of same route! That was exciting. But that was a miscalculation! I see now by comparing just the time of riding that I was 25 minutes slower to get from top to bottom and back to top. And before that, I was 12 minutes slower to reach the turn! UGH. So 12 slower to get to Bartlett turn + 25 slower to return to top. That is already 37 slower.
Oh the ride to the top was under partial sun as it was a bit cloudy all the way up there.
Then out to Sears-Kay Ruin. About same time for that out-back.
Then down to Cave Creek DQ. This time i just had the blizzard and fries. Whereas last time I had a burger as well, but that was hard to get down. I arrived at DQ 20 minutes later than last time. Spent about same time of 35 minutes. Had a bathroom break that probably made times about same.
I stopped again at Culver's to refill both bottles since I was thisty. Then stopped again to put my feet, legs, hands, arms in a water sprinkler to cool off!
All in all it was a fun ride and I was feeling ok the whole time.
