Rode my single speed and was the sweep for the event. I started after everyone else, perhaps as late as 7:30. I lost my Garmin when leaving the area of the ride, either at my car or the patio for the Starbucks, which served as the ride headquarters after LAW was unable to get their permit to use one of the schools. I caught up with another sweep at or near Peach Hill, and saw a hefty sort leaving there just as I pulled in. I was the last registered rider to leave there, and caught the hefty bloke along the road and more-or-less stayed with him the rest of the way. I did, however, stop for a nice Mexican breakfast at the Somis Cafe, and then gave chase again. I had just caught him when I lost the chain on my single speed and had to stop to make the repair; I signaled him to go on, and I did not catch him again until we made it to a slight climb. I stopped again for a short nap at a market in Ventura before the climb to Ojai, and caught him again just after the turn onto Creek Rd. It was getting near sunset by the time we made it to the Ojai rest stop, which had closed. An Adobo club member had been working that stop, and had backtracked to find us, and came back to the park to give us some snacks or something. He checked in with Ira who pulled the plug on the rider and advised that the guy would have to take the SAG vehicle back. The guy was pulling himself inside out as he was in no shape to do any climbing, but was reasonably strong on the flats. He had done the Grand Tour many times (like 20?!!); his only double century. I was relieved that the usual 24 hour time limit was not being used! LOL I flew like the wind and actually caught a few riders before the finish of the ride, including another Adobo club member whose taillight had died, and he was wearing the black kit! Not a good recipe for safety after dark on PCH. Kermit was staffing the finish and had some pizza and other snacks, which were well received, and he stayed for the final stragglers to make it in. I'm guessing I finished somewhere around 11PM. It was not long before the parking on the side street became restricted, so that may help me pin in down as it has been over 5 months since the ride and I just don't remember it that well. I was happy to see Jerold and Celin just before I made it to Somis, and also the "Four score and seven years ago" fellow was out driving SAG.
