Great Fall climbing day with my riding buddy Jessica - Rolled out cool 43 morning at 1000 hrs from town parking lot in Monte Rio down 116 until we came to Austin Creek Rd., that runs along the east side of Austin Creek. Several custom artistic totems greeted us as we rode, dreary eyed up the canyon to the tiny town of Cazadero. Passing through town we came upon a fork in the road, with the middle road being the correct one to follow (King Ridge Road), sign reminding you the it will be narrow and winding for the next 16 miles.
Once away from the warmth of the morning sun on our backs and arms, the shade of the redwoods brought us some very chilly temperatures in the shadows. Jessica would slow down riding back into the sunny areas on the road, trying to thaw out for a short while. On on climb south east of Hauser Bridge, we came upon a Father/Son riding team that I had met last time on the Giro Bello Ride in July. Tom the Dad, and Grant (11 yrs old) is poised to follow in Levi's footsteps for the Gran Fondo in future years. A brief stop at the Hauser Bridge for some photo ops, then back to climbing out of the canyon formed by the San Andreas Fault and Gulala Creek. Temperatures waxed and waned back and forth between the cool Autumn shadows and the warm October sunshine. We began to shed our extra layers until we found a more comfortable temp for climbing - cattle were grazing on the last tidbits of grass, but I swear I heard one say, "Hey Bernie, let's roll the kid for his Clif Bars!”
Across from the Ratna Ling Tibetan Buddhist Retreat Center, bike racks and drinking fountains were installed for cyclists several years ago. Should get them some very good Karma for that good deed!
By now we are at the crossroads at the top of the Meyer’s Grade (Don’t make the mistake of taking the fast track down to Ft. Ross, as it’s a steep 1,500’ climb back to the top after you realize that it was the wrong way to go. Now starting to see the signs for Trucks Use Low Gears, 18% Downgrade... By now also, Jessica is almost out of my sight, being the speed demon she is, leaving me behind to baby my Swiss Stops on carbon rims down the steep Meyer’s Grade road. In the distance I see Jessica disappear into a Stephen King Like fog bank, briskly blowing over the ridge just north of Jenner - now we’re both in it, teeth chattering all the way to the stop sign where we can re-don our arm warmers and windbreakers. Didn’t help much though - my knees were knocking all the way to the Gold Coast Coffee Roasters for a cup of something hot to wrap my fingers around. Refueled after a piece of microwaved pizza and coffee, we followed our route along Moscow Road, back to the town parking lot whence we came. Great day riding after all said and done - long hot showers in the cards for us... no detours.
