Originally the title was going to be, "Trying To Avoid Garbage Miles But Natalie Won't Let Me". But it's too layered and too easily negatively misinterpreted, and I guess I'm not clever enough to make it work. It's a nod to my "No Garbage Miles" Rule and an in-joke about how every time we do a morning ride that Natalie is on, it's garbage day, and there are garbage trucks collecting trash. Go Garbie Gilrs!
I thought I was going to have to put on layers at the start but it quickly warmed up and very soon it was just shorts and short sleeves weather - even at the coffee stop.
We went out to Cooley Landing which I rarely do and discovered a new dirt nubbin (peninsula?).
Coming back passed the Palo Alto Airport, Natalie spotted a red-tailed hawk perched on a tower doing some air traffic control. There were also a lot of big hares in the fields next to the runway. It was like the airport, with it's protective fence and restricted access, was really a protective enclosure for them.
We had a nice stop at Cloud9 philosophizing over a yummy croffle. Hong told us something that I wasn't expecting to hear. He said he has entire color-coordinated gear for each of his bikes. I immediately imagined an MTV Cribs style entrance to a garage where each kit, helmet, shoes, was hung next to their matching bike.
Afterward, through Shoreline, Natalie was describing how if she lowered her voice when announcing herself to people on the trail ahead of her, she got better results/more people hearing her.
That got put to the test when I slowed as we approached a couple that was walking ahead of us but there was also an on-coming bike so I decided to let the bike clear before passing the walkers but Natalie went by me and, in her lowered voice, "ON YOUR LEFT!". The walkers moved over right away and she squeezed between them and the cyclist.
I of course found the whole thing absurdly funny and did my best to hold back my laugh until after we passed them. Hong said the walkers were confused about who called out.
It was a beautiful and fun morning.
