Slept about 4 hours or so and got up very early to get a head start on a very hot day and so I could ride the most direct and fast route east possible.
I made great time through Griffin and jumped on highway 16 through Jackson in the predawn darkness. There wasn't much traffic, most of it was heading west. Once I got east of Monticello there was almost no traffic. Stopped at a gas station for water and snacks at dawn in Eatonton. The highway was completely deserted as I made my way east to turn north at Shoulderbone creek. A thick fog had settled in and blocked the sun completely for a couple of hours. I was really feeling great during this time, as I crossed over the halfway mark and I felt really fresh. I was really trying to pace myself properly not just for today but tomorrow which would be a lot harder. I had a lingering chafing issue from the previous weekend's riding that worried me. I brought tons of chamois butter and used it often and I managed okay. The weather was very humid and hot so I was soaked with sweat most of the ride. The kind of steamy thick soupy air that leaves my gloves and socks soaked through even at a very easy pace.
I set up my route to go through all the counties I had missed before that are near Augusta so I zig zagged north and south and was on gravel quite a bit. Once the fog burned off the temperature began to rise very quickly and I was seeking shade wherever it was on the road. Since I was going through one of the least populated areas of Georgia I didn't have another store till mile 155 or so. Since my first stop was at mile 76 I was really stretching it.
So in Gibson at the DG I got lots of fluids and replenished my snacks. I had stopped at a church a few miles back and used their water to cool off but the water was really sulfur smelling. I still put some in my bottles anyway. By now it was really hot and the main battle was just staying cool. I tried to just focus on my next stop at around mile 190. Which wasn't all that far but seemed to take forever.
As I got closer to Augusta the hills were steeper and longer and I was really cooking in the sun. No clouds at all and it felt like an oven. At some point not too far from my planned stop I found a church and this one had much better and cooler water. Only trouble was the faucet was very low to the ground and next to a corner of the church with a rose bush in front. I still doused myself as well as I could. Filled my bottles and rolled away feeling very cooled off. This didn't last long and I dried off extremely fast in the heat. Before too long 190 miles came and went and still no store so I had remembered wrong. I pushed on through a relatively busy connector road and eventually came to a highway crossing and I stopped at a gas station and filled up again. I only allowed myself the one coke in the morning to limit my caffeine intake so I enjoyed a sprite for the first time in awhile.
The remaining miles into Augusta and through the suburbs was very hot and quite hilly. Thankfully I was mostly on very quiet subdivision roads that would have been nice if it weren't so hot. At last I emerged onto the highway with my hotel and I had planned to stop at the nearby Burger King but it was closed. So I went to a nearby dominos pizza and got a medium cheese with a couple sodas. Checked into my hotel by the interstate and pretty much went to bed right away.
