Met the Treasure Coast Bike Club for their Signature Saturday ride. I rode over the 4 m from the hotel, and arrived plenty early. It was chilly before sun up, but over all it was comfortable, high 50's. We started at about 7:15, just behind the A group. I chose to ride with the B+ group. I figured if I got dropped I could always pick up the B group. We were soon doing 22- 24 with occasions burst to 25+ I pulled a few times going up, but my HR got too high, so I stayed in the back. By the time we got to Ft Pierce I was recovered. I found myself 3rd in line as we started up the causeway bridge. The first guy pulled off fast, and the second guy got us to the base of the steep part. He pulls off, so I figure I'll pull a little and pull off. I'm doing 16 and I tap out and pull off. No one passes. I look back and I'm way ahead. I press on. Shortly after the bridge we stop at a park on the ocean. The A group is there. We wait, but the B group never shows. We take off again and we're soon doing 24+. I pulled my share, but kept them short. About 5 miles before the next bridge they kick it up to 28. I hang on for dear life. There's a 61 y/o woman ahead of me, and I'll be damed if I'm getting dropped by her! We turn and head west again and the pace slows. We're resting for the next bridge. I'm near the back of the pack. We start up the bridge. 40 mi into the ride, but I'm feeling strong. I shift into high gear and get out of the saddle. I start passing everyone. Just before the crest of the the hill I've pass all but one rider. My HR is 99% so I sit down and spin to the top. There I catch my breath and get back into high gear for the descent. I fly by the last rider and bang out what's left. I followed the group back to the park we started at, say my good byes, and head back up to ride the hills on Sky Line Drive. It's a pretty impressive little set of hills for So Fla. On the steepest hill at the peak I'm standing in high gear bearly moving and I drop the chain. I managed to unclip in time to prevent a fall. From there I continue on Skyline Drive and head back to the hotel. A beautiful ride on a beautiful day.
