Mostly followed the TNGA bikepacking route across the state, but in the opposite direction of normal, from the west to east. I did the Cheaha Challenge Ultra the day before starting and was staying in Jacksonville, so I just started from there. I was pretty shelled from the previous day and did not really fully recover from the effort until Wednesday.
2nd day was the most difficult and frustrating. I had planned to make it through the Snake and past Dalton that day but the trail maintenance on fhe Pinhoti trail was really bad. Trees, many of them huge and hard to navigate around, were frequent and sticks were everywhere. It looked like the trail had been abandoned for a long time. The worst part though was the grass. The trail was certainly overgrown with small shrubs and limbs, but they were just annoying. The grass was what almost made me snap. The grass seed was up to my handlebars, and each seed had a spiny tip with barbs that dug into anything cloth. So my socks were just covered in minutes each time I rode through a field(and most of the trail was on a ridge which was mostly grass on top). With pedaling action the barbs worked their way further into my socks and the spines irritated my skin. It was maddening. Walking did the same thing, there was no escaping it. Pulling them out was pretty much futile because the seeds accumulated so fast. So i was pretty bummed the first 8 or so hours of Tuesday. But gradually the maintenance improved and grass lessened as I went further north. A couple of rainstorms went through and I called it a day, a long way still from Dalton.
Wednesday I rode the remaining(and most difficult) part of the Snake, but I was in a better mood and the trail was in decent shape. I really enjoyed the rock gardens, although I had to be very careful since I had already broken a derailleur hanger the first day on a freak stick that got caught, on the Simms mountain rail trail, so I was out of spares. Stopped at Kroger in Dalton, and hit the pavement out of town. I rerouted this section because I thought I found a better, lower traffic route and it was going well until I rounded a bend and encountered a road scraper machine, which wouldn't have been a big deal, but right behind the guy(he was staring at me like I didn't belong there), was a locked cattle gate. I was forced to turn around and find an alternate route. I didn't want to backtrack all the way to town so I just made something up on the spot with my gps map, and traffic was bad on some narrow highways for a few miles, but I joined the route pretty fast and got back on track, but not before going 10 miles out of the way. I made it to the Pinhoti again and camped there late evening.
Thursday was a great day. The trails near Mulberry gap were terrific, and despite being rained on pretty heavily, I had a blast. I rode relatively far to make it to Stanley gap before it got too late and camped, exhausted, the longest day of the trip.
Friday I had planned for my wife to come pick me up in Helen, because I needed to get back home. I actually felt better the last day than any other, I was able to ride pretty hard for most of the day, and the weather was great, and the trails at the beginning of the day, the Aska trails, were my favorite of the whole trip. I had a blast and got to Helen around 5. Although I would have liked to have gone further(I had intended to make it to Franklin, NC), i was very happy with the ride and really had fun. I kept on improving day after day, and I was pleased with my overall ride despite the rough and fatigued start. Perhaps doing a 125 mile, 12,000 ft of climbing road fondo at pretty much max effort the day before a bikepacking trip isn't the best idea for speed, but I made the best of it.
