Bob got another year older this week and he's getting wiser. He found us a bakery really close to the start, East Bay Bakery. They don't have a very fancy name but their pastries were quite good.
I didn't have breakfast intentionally so I could get more pastries and ended up with a very good Pastrami and Cheese Croissant. I think that's a better combo than ham. Plus the croissant part of it was really good before I even got to the pastrami.
I also got a Peach Scone which was good but it was more like a cake than a scone. Their kouign amanns looked weird too. They looked like morning buns. I would've liked to have tried more as their stuff looked good.
I got a little Strawberry Handpie to go which I ate at the top of Diablo. My bar bag was full but it made it to the top in pristine condition.
It started off chilly but we stopped at the school and took off all our layers. It was so quite for the first half of the climb. I didn't want to mention the lack of cars for fear of summoning them. The climb was warm as it usually is and it wasn't until we got to the top that we crossed a layer and it got a little chilly. Fortunately it wasn't chilly at the top.
I had overinflated my tires and forgot to let out some air before the descent. It wasn't as much fun as it could've been.
My least favorite part of the ride is the section just before and just after lunch at Mr. Pickles in Concord.
As we started to climb Morgan Territory, all of sudden sealant started to spray out of my back tire. Normally it seals immediately but it just wouldn't seal and eventually all the sealant came out. The hole wasn't even that big.
We tried plugging it but the lack of sealant meant it was never going to hold air. Or maybe it was Bob's pump because I threw in a tube and his large pump didn't seem to do anything. Sonny's smaller pump did the trick and got the pressure perfect. It felt just like I was riding tubeless (so I guess there was a chance for a pinch flat maybe).
Putting in the tube, I found a piece of what punctured my tire. It looked like a tiny flint arrowhead. It must've broken off from the larger piece. I never felt whatever I ran over. And because of the sealant, I didn't do the normal tire check to make sure there was nothing else that could repuncture the tube. In hindsight, I should've and I got lucky.
When we got started again, we were cold. Bob didn't appreciate the extra effort we put in on the short, punchy, climbs to warm back up. It was either that or put all our layers back on.
Before the flat, I was feeling tired, but once we got climbing again, although my legs were sore, they felt good.
The plan was to stop at the top to put layers back on before the descent but Bob, he got to the top after Sonny and I, said he was going to keep rolling and meet us at the bottom. And then Sonny followed suit so I did too.
By this time they were both way ahead and I wish they had just waited because the golden hour light on the descent was so pretty.
Just as I got to the start of the descent, a car was approaching from behind and Sonny was just ahead. I wasn't going to let the car ruin the descent so I sprinted ahead and passed Sonny. I would've stopped to get photos of Sonny in that golden light but the car was on his wheel so I just caught Bob instead.
We were taking it easy until we got to Highland Rd. where Bob decided to light it up. On the descent, Sonny was letting a gap open and I don't know if Bob decided that was his opportunity to stretch his legs. I went around Sonny and caught the train so I was happy about that.
Before the ride we decided on a 9a start time to make sure we finished before sunset. We had a late start, the bakery stop, and my flat, but we still managed to finish just before sunset.
