Time to get the monthly 200k ride for Jan. I missed the regular brevet since I was doing FVT/GE work stuff.
Today's ride was a completely solo event of which I got a very late start of 10:15am. Ride north was ok. Riding out west on SVP was fantastic as it was a tailwind, that I hoped would die off when I got to Nuc Plant since it was pretty strong out of the east. Well it did not die, so I had a long slow slog of 11-12 mph from nuc plant back to Verrado.
Coming south on SVP just north of I-10 I noticed there was a wildlife corridor passing under SVP. Then a bit west down in the corridor area I saw a very dark coyote prancing along. He was too far away for a photo.
Of course getting off the SVP/Palo Verde Rd is always a higlight as it signals the next stage of the route - heading to the Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station. That section is nice and quiet (no cars). But then when get down to Baseline and head west to nuc, then it becomes really busy. I had a goal this time to explore other optinos for roads. Due to the wind fom the e I decided to stay on-route to the Wintersburg General Store. Then after that I would take the W and N roads that are north of Salome Hwy to see how that went.
At Wintersburg, I had one of the 5.29$ egg salad sandwiches and a bag of Cool Ranch Bugles. Yummy. Then off I went after refilling the water. I did not see a bathroom in the store.
I road a bit on Salome Hwy until reached Lower Buckeye Rd, which is wide and with a shoulder. It has a few freeze-crack bumps but was much more enjoyable to ride than Salome. All these roads back to Baseline ( mile 64 - 72.3 ) were paved and I would be good to ride them again.
Then again there was a ton of traffic on baseline and with the headwind made me turn N on Johnson 75.4 up to Southern at 76.4. I noticed that Wahoo had a challenge finding the route again at this point, so I ended the route and opened it again. Now Wahoo kept trying to get me back to the start as soon as it could, whenever I was off route. Then finally back up in Sundance around mile 88.4 when I was back on the route, Wahoo got it's act together.
The sun had set back around mile 107. Around here I put on my bull shifter vest.
Unfortunately, but not as bad as it could have been, I forgot about that outdoor eating/music place up by White Tank park entrance and how it would attract lots of cars. Fortunately my passing that area between 6 - 6:30pm was before the high volume of cars arrived and there was not too much traffic.
It was great to look out over the valley from White Tank Library witt the city lights all on. Here I put on my orange wind breaker and gloves for the downhill run home.
Nice to be done! It stayed cool the whole time.
