We drove to Homestead Friday night to avoid the horrible traffic on Sat AM. The Day's Inn was cheap, but not very nice. Glad it was only one night.
Most people drove to the start at Homestead Speedway Sat AM, but I rode the 4.9 mi. I pulled the bike out of the room only to find I had a flat on the front wheel. Bummer! I fixed it and headed "off to races."
Joy was driving down to Key Largo so most of the club put their stuff in our van rather than have UPS truck it down. Every one was VERY appreciative.
The start was pretty exciting, and we got to do a lap around the hi banked track to start. I tried to hang on to Felix's wheel but eventually got dropped. At some point I joined our main group and we kept a pretty nice pace for the first 45 mi or so. But going thru Homestead I missed a turn and lost our group. I tried to catch them but they were too far ahead. I could only hold 19 into the headwind on Card Sound Road, and I was riding solo. As I tired I found a group of 2 other riders and we rotated for several miles. I was having intermittent cramps, so the slower pace at a high cadence helped. At some point a larger group passed and I had recovered enough to hang on. I took it real easy going over the bridge, and stopped with the group at the rest area on the other side. I hung with them for a while until the cramps started again, and I dropped.
I never got into another group, so I solo'ed for the last 10 mi or so. With about 2 mi to go I was a familiar sight, Joy pulled over when she passed me. I stopped and after a kiss and some love'n I was renewed. She headed down to the hotel to check in, and I headed to the finish line.
After I finished I immediately got in line for a massage. While she was not the best, she did work on my crampy legs. After that I got lunch and a beer. I was soon back on the road for the 3.5 mi ride to the hotel. After about 2 mi I heard the all too familiar sound and I flatted. As I was changing it, a good Samaritan came by and gave me a lift to the hotel. I forgot to turn off my GPS so I hit my high speed for the day, 45.7 mph, in the car. I was tired, a bit achy, and glad it was over.
