Ride went pretty well considering I had a couple of setbacks. I realized upon beginning the ride that I had forgotten to switch my cassette to a more climbing friendly one. So I was stuck with my close ratio 11-32 cassette suited to mild rolling hills. Thankfully this wasn't much of an issue, as the grades were actually pretty reasonable throughout.
But my major problem was on the first major descent of the Skyway after it got ugly, and I cut my rear tire on a sharp rock while picking my way down. It was a fairly big slice, on the tread but off to the side a little, and I knew that one bacon strip wasn't going to cut it. I eventually jammed 5 or 6 in there and it sort of held. I rode it for awhile under pressure like this hoping the sealant and dirt would congeal around the hole and form a good seal. This worked for awhile and I rode all the way to just past Bulls gap, sometimes having to stop to reposition the bacon strips again, and put more air in the tire. Eventually it just stopped holding air. So I finally gave up and put a tube in, which is what I should have done in the first place. Would have saved 30-45 minutes.
Other than that I had issues with the route. i had to turn around near Mump creek reservoir because the road I had mapped out had not been travelled in years and was completely overgrown and I had to get past a 'no trespassing' gate(it said I needed a permit to be there and listed all sorts of activities that were banned there(like 15) but not one was cycling). And I really didn't have time to bushwack for miles trying to get through so I turned around. I rerouted on pavement back roads back to the route but it added a few extra miles.
The day was wearing on and I was really wanting to get close to the end. So i poured over the map and decided to follow my route till I got back to to the hard road(Cheaha road) and just shortcut to the end of the route. So I didn't finish the whole thing I planned but I still ended up with nearly 90 miles anyway.
Really liked the route other than the backtracking. There was a lot of really great long stretches of gravel rollercoaster roads that were fun as hell. None of the climbs felt like a slog, probably due in part to the fact that they were short. Good ride.
