Test ride with Nell of this revised permanent route. Our route map for the test ride:
https://ridewithgps.com/routes/28415457
Nell had 136 miles total distance. We definitely had some bonus miles.
The test ride included about 3/10ths of a mile of "hike-a-bike" at mile 81.8 where the unpaved road was much too sandy to ride with a street bike. I restored the original route in this area to avoid the necessity to "hike a bike" in the future. (At least, in this section; there is still a 1 mile segment of gravel/dirt road earlier in the route.)
In addition, we turned back and went around the steep hill on Halcyon at mile 76.2. It looked quite steep and was without a shoulder; with significant motor vehicle traffic, Nell was understandable very uncomfortable, and the detour around was just fine. I changed the route accordingly.
We had also done the maximum "scenic tour" of the Shell Beach area, and a few other, leisurely food stops which took our total time right to the limit for what was then officially a 210 km route. (it is now 205 km.)
The CA-133 did have sections with no shoulder, but the traffic was reasonably light and all but 1 car passed us with a nice, safe margin.
Drum Canyon was delightful, even though we descended in the dark. The upper portion of the descent is on very rough pavement, but it is no problem with decent headlights.
The track of this ride differs significantly from the finalized route map in diverting from the CA-1 at mile 78.9, and in heading east through the area of Betterveria and the western edge of Santa Maria and Orcutt (miles 78.9 through 106.1). This did allow us access to services in the Santa Maria area which are not on the finalized route, which keeps to the CA-1 until the split with CA-135 (at mile 106.7 on this track).
We stopped for food at the Rancho Nipomo BBQ (great pulled -pork sandwich that we shared at mile 46.9; we started later than we had originally planned, and it had just opened at 11AM); the Seaside Cafe & Bakery in Shell Beach at mile 66.5 (it definitely redefines expectations for avocado toast; we split the order here, too!); and a McDonald's at mile 96.9 in Santa Maria.

Best format for turn-by-turn directions on modern Garmin Edge Devices
Best format for turn by turn directions on Edge 500, 510. Will provide true turn by turn navigation on Edge 800, 810, 1000, Touring including custom cue entries. Great for training when we release those features. Not currently optimal for Virtual Partner.
Useful for uploading your activity to another service, keeping records on your own computer etc.
Useful for any GPS unit. Contains no cuesheet entries, only track information (breadcrumb trail). Will provide turn by turn directions (true navigation) on the Edge 705/800/810/1000/Touring, but will not have any custom cues. Works great for Mio Cyclo. Find GPS specific help in our help system.
Estimated Time shows a prediction of how long it would take you to ride a given route. This number is based on your recent riding history, and represents an estimate of moving time. Each time you upload a new ride, your Estimated Time profile will adjust to reflect your most recent riding. Only rides exceeding 10 miles (16 km) will affect these estimates.
