The perfect day for a race! Low humidity, cool and low wind. 70 racers started the race. As usual I had a hard time clipping in because of the new cleats and possibly the shoe cover getting caught. So I was dead last on starting but I thought no big deal the race is 61 miles which turned out to be 66.5 miles. I was a little worried about my conditioning for this distance since my training was not up to par for it. I stay well within my reserves as to not burn myself out. The major problem with this race was the double yellow line. the racers took up the entire lane and you could not pass without crossing over and taking a chance of getting DQ. I felt pretty good and only started to get hints of cramping after 50 miles. I really tried to stay relaxed to control the cramps. I figured I would be able to move up on the last lap and I tried the peloton was tight and no one was giving up an inch. I crossed the line to make a pass and one racer went ballistic. So I gave him back his spot which I shouldn't have. I was never able to get around him. going into the last mile 4 racers crossed over the yellow line to pass me I finally decided to follow suit but a car was coming up and was not moving over or slowing. They almost got hit, I moved back in but lost their wheel, I then went out again as some of the other racers started to complain. Then the pace started to go into an early sprint. I was on the move but wonder if I could hold this pace for a mile but I gave it a go. When I got to the sprint zone racers were all over the road some were just coming to a crawl and I could not get a straight line to the finish to sprint so I just maintained my speed to avoid crashing into someone as they were not holding any type of line. I ended up in 44th not what I was expecting but I couldn't do nothing about it. I felt if I could have moved up, I was ready to sprint. I know I should have not been that far back but I couldn't get around and didn't want to over exert trying to, I guess it was a chance I should have taken but kept thinking it would open up and I could get around. Each lap was faster than the previous lap too. I was the oldest in the race so most were under 40.
