After arriving at Uxbridge and chatting as usual I called for the long ride to leave only to be overwhelmed by 18 takers! Usually 6 is a lot on a long ride. Tea at Windsor coach station, the same 11's stop as the medium ride, the numbers were reduced as some came to their senses and swapped rides!
Off through Windsor and in the great park via the St Leonards road gate and out via Dukes lane gate and into Watersplash lane to Ascot, Sunninghill and to the Surrey Cricketers for lunch.
I had not phoned them as I was only expecting to bring 4 or 5 on the long ride, they were not phazed by the large group and we were served very quickly but the food an age to arrived, over an hour and when it arrived is was just okay.
Leaving lunch that late meant the Vermuelens, our afternoon tea stop, would most likely be closed. The route back again took in Windsor great park via the Blacknest gate and the path around the lake to Virginia water and through Virginia water village. At this point 2 miscreants went ahead of the leader at the traffic lights and went the wrong way, (boy did I chuckle). They eventually caught us up.
Through Egham Hythe and onto Staines and Moor lane and across Stanwell Moor to Poyle, having decided that Vermuelens would be closed as it was now 4.20pm we went onto tea (well cold drinks as the kitchen was being re-furbed), at the Five Bells Harmondsworth.
As we were now close to home, well Uxbridge and plenty were heading that way and knew the route I discharged myself from leader duties and took my leave and headed home via Harlington, Cranford, Heston etc.
I enjoyed the ride and it was nice to see a good turnout for a long ride, for me it was just over 60 miles but Uxbridge to Uxbridge would have to around 50 dead.
