I didn't expect much from myself in this race but was happy with how I did. I had a full blown cold and only got an hour of sleep the night before. So i was more relaxed than normal at the start because I expected to be totally off pace and just ride the thing to get it over with and enjoy it as well I as I could.
I started near the front of the 50 or so riders for the 100 and was able to stay with they front of the race as the ramped up the pace quickly. Unfortunately I dropped my chain inexplicably and it was too bumpy to try to put it back on by hand so I had to stop and lose half a minute. Had to chase pretty hard to get back on but I made it within a mile or so. No sooner had I got back on did I throw my chain yet again. This stop took less time than the first and was back pretty soon. After this I shifted onto the larger cogs for downhills to increase the chain tension. My chain is a little long for the cassette I had on there, due to my having a larger one on recently.
There was a lot of scares on this ride: the many wooden bridges with parallel boards with gaps, that everyone managed just fine, the huge rocks flying everywhere kicked up by our tires, more scary than any gravel race i'd done(one baseball sized rock flew up and hit me in the helmet, making me swear to use safety glasses at least on every gravel race from now on), and the presence of a 6 inch in diameter log in the middle of my line that I had to bunnyhop while pacelining.
In addition the rain set in after a couple of hours and was off and on all day, at times a downpour. Thankfully almost all the roads had enough gravel on them to make them passable. Only once did we encounter a sticky mud situation but it didn't last long and didn't do any damage.
For most of the race the front was 12 of us and there were 3 strong guys really pushing the pace at times, but each surge they put forth wasn't enough to break the group up. While the course is hilly and was difficult with loose gravel and mud, it wasn't really hard enough to be easy to separate a pack. Until about mile 90 that is, when the three surged again and most of us didn't have anything left to hang on. I was close to my limit for awhile before that and I was just waiting for the moment when I would get dropped. I did put forth what little energy I had for awhile, but was never able to catch back on. So I rode in at a slightly more comfortable pace to the finish. I was just glad I held on as long as I did, and I had a great time.

Best format for turn by turn directions on Edge 500, 510. Will provide true turn by turn navigation on Edge 800, 810, 1000, Touring including custom cue entries. Great for training when we release those features. Not currently optimal for Virtual Partner.
Useful for uploading your activity to another service, keeping records on your own computer etc.
Useful for any GPS unit. Contains no cuesheet entries, only track information (breadcrumb trail). Will provide turn by turn directions (true navigation) on the Edge 705/800/810/1000/Touring, but will not have any custom cues. Works great for Mio Cyclo. Find GPS specific help in our help system.
