This is NOTES to SELF about getting set for cold weather. It was going to be chilly at 7:00 AM, but a tiny bit warmer to the south, so I headed to Sudbury and Framingham, planning to do 2 30-40 mile loops before returning to my old CCW loops to finish it off. It was 30ish early, so I wore Gortex floppy pants OVER the two thermal long legs and also had fabric shoe covers as well as 5-hr chemical warmers in my shoes - all of that was necessary. Somewhere I lost my wraparound neck covering, but I had an extra soft fabric balaclava-so I slid the whole thing down on my neck. This tres chic outfit (plus bar mitts kept me warm and the sun staying out helped a lot as well. I thought the southern stuff was pretty flat, but the hill on Concord St in Saxonville near the Subway and Pizza Palace damn near killed me and knocked .3 miles off my average speed at that point. If I had to repeat it, I'd still be out there riding. So I beat feet home - shed the Gortex pants, but kept the other warmth - and rode to Concord DD for a Coke, Donut and Egg/ham/Cheese muffin to get some food in. At this point I had 39 miles so 4 loops would finish it off. I went to New London for a Pepsi and a slice after 2 laps. Since I had to ride home from Concord (5 miles), "lap" 4 was just out and back on Lowell Road, trying to cut it short before any extraneous climbing, planning to make up the miles for a century+ going out and back on Waltham St in Wayland. With all this folderol, I did get in about 20 minutes before sunset, although there was plenty of light. Large Beaver killed by Macones Pond outflow on Lowell Road.
