This was one of those outings that went awry right from the start and never recovered. We started off fine until we reached the bottom of the first descent and there was no sign of Ethan. It turned out that his bike had no working brakes, and so he had to walk down any decline. Since this was a planned downhill run, that cut into the fun just a bit. Factor in that he had only brought along about 1/4 of his pack's water capacity and soon ran out in the oppressive heat and we had the beginnings of an epic fail on our hands. Luckily I had plenty of water to go around so that crisis was averted, but the slow pace on the descent meant that we were going to run well past our expected return time. We were in a cellphone dead zone, too, given that we were tucked way back into the Soldier Creek drainage and we had no way of calling for help or letting the family know of our situation. After a couple of hours of crawling down the mountain, I elected to ride ahead to see if I could pick up cell signal. I was able to do so and get in contact with my wife, who in turn headed off with the car to pick us up. We continued on down the old road and soon saw a mama bear cross ahead of us with cubs, which ironically happened soon after Laura commented, "how could things go any worse?" :) We waited them out and then cruised on by and on along the edge of Sundance Mountain, where we finally encountered my wife and Ethan's dad waiting for us at a creek crossing that was nearly impassable for the car. Everyone breathed a sigh of relief and loaded up the car - except for me, who elected to finish up the ride on my bike. Guess what? I beat the car back!
