Jeff, our resident historian and expert on architecture, took us in search of West Somerset's "revolution". That's the Industrial Revolution- the story of iron ore mining on the Brendons and the 13mile mineral railway from Watchet via the incline to the mines..The ride started fromt the car park of PT Winchester, on Westridge Way, Bishops Lydeard (approach road to West Somerset Railway (WSR) at the crack of dawn (well 9.30 AM) on Saturday morning. The route was very hilly to the Brendons with a serious climb out of Brompton Ralph. The intention was to follow an industrial “trail” of iron ore extraction and the mineral railway from mine shaft to the dockside in Watchet. A bit of off/road, off/bike exploration was all part of the experience! Extreme weather conditions and the varied needs of riders meant that only four out of twelve riders continued to Watchet taking the train back to Bishops Lydeard. They continued into Washford and then took the main A39 to Washford Cross and then the B3190 into Watchet. Several left the ride before the end to head back on a more direct route and as we approached Watchet another group toiled back along the lanes to Taunton. The Heavy rain and thunder and lightening meant that the planned picnic was changed to a retreat to the pub at Raleigh's Cross where a hot drink and covertly consumed packed lunch saved the day. Total mileage for those starting and returning all the way to and from Taunton as approximately 50 miles and the mileage for the Bishops Lydeard to Watchet option was about 28m. Many thanks to Jeff for once again leading an interesting and entertaining ride.
