Day 4 and the return to Barrie, into a stiff headwind all day. Today we had a hot breakfast of eggs and sausage links. Meanwhile about 5 volunteers worked at a solution to my junked-up freewheel, which at the time we were not sure it was junk or broken. Turns out Dave Thompson the ride owner, RUSA President, is also a good bike mechanic and he took an 11 speed wheel from a rider that DNF'd (Luc) and removed the cassette and replaced it with my 10 speed cassette and attached it all along with the chain to get me running! I moved the lights back to my bike, attached the computer and was good to go.
Meanwhile Don ensured that I was NOT paying attention to the repair and that I was eating. Again, I should have eaten more, but I was looking for more carbs, hoping there would have been potatoes.
Turns out this would be another carb deficit day. So a late start! Many of the fast riders got away at 530 or 6 so they could do the 135 miles back to Barrie and then do the last 55 miles ( ie Day 5) and be done with 1300k in 4 days. Me - well getting to Barrie before dark was my goal.
Of I went on my own. Very late start. I was up at 630 but it took a while to get the bike ready and I finally got rolling at 8am. UGH.
Spent all day trying to catch up with Mimo and Mark. I would see them at controls but they always left ahead of me. The controls were spread out today!
The first rest stop was when Dave Thompson was there by the road with snacks at mile 55.7. Food, food for me. By this time I had consumed over 1200 calories of snacks I had on my bike, just today. Dave had 1 leftover sandwich that Mimo took.
Then a few miles down the road, Mimo who was ahead of me, slowed down until I caught him. By this time all I was thinking was to stop and take a nap. Mimo handed out the sandwich and instantly upon seeing it, I was refreshed! Then I had the joy of eating the sandwich on the ride and was even better! Thank you Mimo.
At mile 76.4 I pulled over and had a 6 minute nap.
Over to mile 81.8 at the Quaker Oaks Farm, where there was a very cute farmette with a lunch stand. Mimo and Mark were there at the picnic table and then I pulled up and had a turkey sandwich that the owner made for me. See photos. This was a 35 minute stop!
Finally by 6 pm I made it to the big town of Orillia, on the shore of Lake Simcoe! There I pulled into Arby's to get water at mile 104.2. It started to sprinkle a bit. I saw Don and Jacques going the other direction! This was an open control so no volunteers.
Now for the last 28 miles to Barrie and to get there before dark! I opted NOT to eat in Orillia and just headed home. As I approached the turn onto Ridge Rd mile 110.5 I saw another rider coming toward me. They looked like a rando! It was 6:25pm. If it was a rando, I thought they were lost!
So off I went on Ridge Rd and this Rando rider caught me! This is a gorgeous road with low traffic and lots of cottages ( houses that folks from Toronto have where some are over 10,000 sq ft).
Turns out he was on the last leg of the Day 5 of 55 miles which is this same Ridge Rd. So we road together for about 5 miles, alternating pulls until I could not keep that pace. At least by then I was closer to home.
Some more spits of rain and still the challenge to get to town by dark. Sunset was pretty and I hit town with plenty of light, but the ride through town is 7 miles. It was very enjoyable and little traffic. Finally arrived at the hotel to applause at 8:15pm ! Awesome I was the Lantern Rouge that day and so all riders were back to Barrie before dark, which gave comfort to Dave Thompson.
Pizza and salad awaited us. Mike Sturgill was there with his medal on as he had done the extra 55 miles, since he arrived at Barrie and 1230 and then did the 55 miles to be done at 530! Boy am I slow!
Only 55 miles left to go! I was tired and needed to get back to the AirBnB I had prior to the ride. Mike took my drop-bag in his car and dropped it at the air bnb and I rode over there.
Showered and got some sleep. Probably like 1030pm before sleep. Another long day.
