Another sort of early start, considering that I got in at 1234 the night before, so with eating, shower, and getting ready for next day, the amount of sleep was around 4.5 hours. So in addition to calorie deficit, I also have sleep deficit.
Today should have been easier, since about 30 miles shorter! Famous should have. Tommy and I estimated we would be about 3 hours less time on the road. We were off by almost an hour, as we were under 2 hours less time, so another long day. The relentless procession of hills continued. By now i had gotten into routine that is Wahoo saw a real hill that I then shifted to lowest gear and made my way slowly up the hill!
Started a bit later this morning, since less miles. So got about 4.5 hours sleep. Tommy went on ahead.
They had Subway sandwiches for us at mile 76.5, Madawaska. Getting there was a great feat. Sat in a lawn chair while the volunteers read off the choice of sandwich toppings. They had coordinated with Subway to get X number of bread parts, meat parts, and toppings. then the volunteers would assemble whatever the rider wanted.
By now it was getting hot so the shade was nice. then it was time to take off and chase Mimo up the next longer set of climbs as I left lunch. Mimo had arrived at lunch before me so he left ahead of me as did Mark.
So i hit the hills of a 500 ft climb by myself heading east from Madawaska. This was a busy road and in some spots, no good shoulder. I was getting a bit annoyed with all the traffic compared to the quiet we had on other roads. Then finally I hit a peaceful spot where traffic reduced! I could hear the birds and began listening to the wind! Then all of sudden a voice came from behind "you what could make this better, is someone to bike with" was coming from Mimo as he came up from behind me. He had stopped to take a nap my the road and when he awoke, he saw me riding by! Amazing.
Mile 96.1 was our next control in Barry's Bay in a park like area across from Charlie D's. Mark T and Mimo were here already. They suggested ice cream or shakes over at Charlie D's, so I proceeded to get a cherry flavored shake YUMMY. I also got a container of putine with beef gravy! It was my first taste of putine and it was delicious! Unfortunately it was so large I could not eat all of it! Of course Mimo and Mark left before I did and again I was in a chase! Here also was where volunteers Don and Jacques thought they missed Stanley. Turns out the Spot tracker they were following was on Mark T! So Stanley was behind me.
This next section along Old Barrys Bay Rd, mile 96.1 - 108.3, was my favorite of the day. Nice little cottages, no traffic, good road.
Then a quick stop at Quadeville control at mile 122.9, where I rode on south a bit to the community center to use their bathroom. Mimo, Mark and another rider were already at the control when I arrived. So again Mimo and Mark took off up the hill without me. This was another slog uphill and fighting off bugs!
Then finally at mile 132.2 I reached the high point of that section and the bugs went away! By now it was after 630 pm (12 hours on the road) so starting to approach night time.
Then the last control at mile 152.9. Then the monster hill of 500 ft climb that took 21 minutes for Mimo, Fred, and I. I chose to fall behind because Fred had way to bright of taillight.
Then it happened! Mile 164.5 was when my freewheel said it was too gunked-up to work any longer and so it would not engage the chain to the wheel, so I could spin like a hamster in the pedals and just sit there. After twisting the cassette a few times in trying to get it to work, I started walking. The night was gorgeous as there was a slight warmth to the slight breeze and I could see stars. I was enjoying the walk and it never crossed my mind to DNF.
In about 5-10 minutes there comes the usual honking of volunteers Don and Jacques and they jumped into action! Being 10pm, and no cell service, we all realized my options were to get another bike or wheel or clean the junk. They proceeded to the top of the next hill and there they started calling as they had cell service. They reached Brenda ( of Tim and Brenda). She agreed to bring Tim's fancy bike to me along with a wheel. She was 23 km away, so that would take some time. Meanwhile Don and Jacques came back to me and we chose to continue to walk until we met Brenda, which coincided with the top of the hill that Don and Jacques had used. Don walked beside me and Jacques followed in Don's Rav 4 prime.
There we switched headlight and taillight ( Don wrapped some tape around the bike frame so the tail light mount would work) to Tim's bike, adjusted the saddle height, I took 1 water bottle, with my bike computer in my pocket and headed off. Turns out navigation of these last ~23 miles was easy. Continue on the road I was on until it T-ed. Turn right and proceed until the stop light, which was in Bancroft. Turn right and go to the Sword Inn.
This was the first time for me to ride an electronic shift bike and disk brakes! Man-o-man was that fun! Plus there were NO packs on the bike so it was super light! I was a bit scared that my self-contained headlight would go dead so kept it on low even though descending. I did take a spare battery bank and cord to connect it too if I needed, yet had not good way to mount that. So if the light died, I would be out there waiting a bit for it to recharge or figuring out a way to hold the bank while riding. Luckily that did not happen.
Don and Jacques waited at the T. Then off I went from a small road with some bumps to a big striped road with a shoulder that was brand-new pavement! And there were zero cars! That was fun!
Finally to the stop light! Then the Sword Inn at about 2am. There were 2 volunteers there are the ready to serve me some lasagne and homemade rolls. I tried to eat the 2nd serving of penne pasta but that was not as tasty as the lasagne so opted to head to my room for shower and 3.5 hours of sleep.
UGH. Well at least no DNF at this point. But would need to figure out what I would do for the last 2 days! So many volunteers helped me get to here!
