Of course I gave chase and he slowed purposely. we then rode with him pulling at 23 mph along the diagonal section. then we stopped to check on a cyclist that was standing by the road. she said she had her 2nd flat of the day and her husband was coming to help. so we took off. this time I took the lead into a fierce headwind. after just a little bit I turned to him stating I can't do this pace into the wind. we both slowed to 13mph and chatted all the way to Shell. this guy wore a piece of leather shading his nose. we had met once before out here. very strong guy. then he went his own way and i pulled into shell and there were about 15 SWB cyclists including Artie. so o quickly got water and rode back with them for a bit until a big horse man went to the front and took us to 32 mph.
