Started dry but a couple miles in it began to rain lightly, and temperatures were not very warm so I was not feeling more than a short ride. However I had not gotten much riding in this week other than my birthday so I was keen on staying out as long as I could. I pressed on up the climb up Onion mountain as the rain drifted in and out, mostly fading to light drizzle. It wasn't enough to wet my gloves by Ellijay road and I almost considered going up to Tilley Creek but I decided to just go to Little Ellijay road and climb up that a ways. I warmed up considerably on this climb and the rain held off. I took a side road to the left about 2/3rds of the way up which presumably went through public lands since there weren't any no tresspassing signs. I continued and after about a half mile encountered a metal gate. Still with no signs indicating private property I continued. I followed this super steep road(which looked like someone uses it occasionally if for no other reason than there were no limbs or trees across the road), which climbed to over 4000 feet and presented me with a few side roads to choose from. I chose one and it dead ended at an old christmas tree field on a very steep slope. I turned and went back to the junction, selected another road and this one crossed what was labeled on my map as Little Salt Rock creek. With all the rain it had a decent waterfall so I took a pic of it and it began to sleet. I was happy that it wasn't rain though, because it wouldn't soak in. I was toasty warm from the climb so it didn't bother me. I came to another major junction. Both options looked equally beaten down. I took the one to the right since that was kinda the way I needed to go, back toward Walnut Gap. It turned out to be the right choice, because I soon emerged into an enormous pasture, where my heavy sleet turned to snow, and I crested a little hill and hit a flat section, on grass in the middle of an open pasture. I followed the faint road until I picked up gravel again, and was presented with another fork. I took the right one again after consulting my garmin, then began descending on this well maintained gravel road, which entered the woods soon after the beginning of the descent. As soon as I entered the field I knew I was on private property, but with the snow and all, I really didn't want to turn around, as I figured I was fairly close to Walnut Gap. This turned out to be correct, short descent and a couple rollers took me to a gate, which I walked around, and onto Pine Creek road just below the gap. I climbed up and the precipitation stopped and I put on my dry pair of gloves for the descent down Little Ellijay road. It was in the low fifties at the bottom, which felt great after a cool descent. The roads had dried out and I thought I was home free, but it began raining about 5 miles out from home. No matter though, I was plenty warm enough and I soon arrived home.
