From Chambers to Holbrook, AZ We were planning on spending 20 glorious (not) and dark miles along the shoulder of Interstate 40, the only reasonable way for us to continue riding Route 66. Randoplan told us to expect high winds, peaking at 23mph shortly after noon. So we decided to get an early start on the day to get a jump on the winds. Starting an hour earlier was supposed to save us an hour and a half of ride time. Back to I-40: we were supposed to take the road through the Petrified Forest for the scenery and to get us off the highway for most of the rest of the day. However, because of the government shutdown, the road was closed. We had no choice but to continue on the I-40 shoulder all the way to our destination town. It saved us about 15mi but was very stressful. We are both spent. Oh, and we both picked up tire wires but so far, Megan's the only one that flatted from them.
