This Dead of Winter ( DoW) was day 2 of the 2 identical route rides for this double double century. Mike and I packed up our hotel room after the 4am wakeup. We got started at 456am. Weather was about the same as day prior so again I dressed with blue woolie underlayer, jersey ( & 2nd jersey by mistake), bull shifter vest, sun sleeves, arm warmers, and orange wind breaker , skull cap. Yes that was overdressed in retrospect.
About half way around the 40 mile start loop Mike noticed his rear shifter cable was probably fraying. So he asked me to slow to 18 mph from our 21 that we were cruising at. When we got back to hotel I had breakfast at the continential bar while he replaced his cable! Yep he had all the tools and the cable, except the wire snippers. One of the bike event volunteers had the clippers. He grabbed a quick plate of eggs and sausage biscuit sandwich and we were on the way.
We rode together until we got to Casitas Springs road to Ojai. I was starting to fade and needed electrolytes and food. I was stupid and kept riding up to Creek Rd and even a few miles on Creek Rd until I finally stopped and ate/electolytes. Yes I should have removed my blue woolie but Mike just does not stop! Machine Mike. I knew once I was done with the climb to the Inn Summitt above Ojai that I would want my woolie on, so I just left it on.
I felt much better with the food/tables. Turns out met Mike as he was descending from the Inn and I was ascending. He was 1 mile down from the summit, so not that far ahead! I didn't think I could catch him, yet I wanted to keep it close since we were driving back to AZ together after the ride.
Quick turn around at summit and then descent to Mob Shop where I used the bathroom. Set off to get to top of Casitas pass in daylight! By myself. Felt great. I downed 4 Hammer gel packs at Mob shop. Yet by time I got to top of Casitas I knew I should have taken in more calories. At top of the 2nd Casitas Pass, it was dark enough to have lights on for the descent, yet they did not help much in the twilight. The sun was set and a deep red color was on the horizon! Gorgeous. I actually made it all the way down to Rincon before it got really dark.
Turns out at Rincon Pt check point, the last one before the 26 mile run down the coast, I ate a pack of chocolate chip cookies ( 4 smallish cookies). That was not enough and I went slower than I liked down the coast. But it was nice not to follow Mike blinkie and bright flash of radar.
Great ride!
