Started at 4am with the alarm and on the bikes by 446am. Mike and I shared a hotel room at the starting hotel as it was convenient and they had a continental hot breakfast waiting for us after the iniital 40 mile loop back to the hotel! I enjoyed the breakfast. That first loop was calm, low traffic and not much wind. Some roads next to fields had dried mud spots to dodge. Breakfast then out for the main part of ride. The route went out on some of the roads we already did but it was nice to see them in daylight. Before the bring your own food lunch stop, the highlight had to be the butterfly part of the route up by Moorpark! Manicured citrus & avocado groves, big houses. Climbs of Grimes and Balcom canyon were fun. The getting through town and over to lunch was a bit of a pain though. Oh on Grimes I passed Mike to take the lead and it seemed to get harder and harder. Then there was a descent over to Balcom at which point Mike went ahead and I just could not catch him! Odd for I know I coast faster than him. Then up a bit on Balcom, I noticed it was gettting harder and Mike was pulling away. Turns out my rear time was getting extremely low. So pulled off to fix the flat and removed a small piece of wire from my brand new tire. I was tired by the time I got to lunch. I had picked up a buddy, David, from LA area and we rode the last few miles to lunch. There was Mike waiting for me and Ron the San Diego BS. After lunch Mike and I rode together the rest of the ride! Awesome climb up to Summit Inn above Ojai and the descent down. From Mob shop in Ojai we then headed toward Casitas Pass to get as far as we could in daylight. on the last 1.7 mile part to E Casitas Pass we actually had some sunlight on us. then on down to and up to W casitas Pass. Then down to Rincon Point. Got some water and snacks and headed down bike trail on the coast and in those first couple miles we saw the sun setting over the ocean over our right shoulder! Awesome red color then ensued for 45 minutes. No tail wind though to push us, so a bit disappointing. Got back to hotel, showered, then headed to Wendy's where they were having computer issues. Finally got our food and ate there. There back to hotel and sleep. Great day
