There was a mixture of experiences today - slow quiet climbs in lush vegetation, seaviews, mad rushing traffic, beach cruising, great cycle paths and even a couple of boat trips!
As seems inevitable, the weather was clear for our early departure. Our bikes had to be carried downstairs through a narrow stairway with a bend, so it was with some relief that we managed to get clear of our lovely but small room without damaging ourselves or the walls.
Once on the way, it was a matter of following a cycleway that changed from the left side to the right side to the middle of the road, randomly, at each traffic junction. As usual, we kept to the cycle path as much as possible, not that we could always keep up with the changes! Which sometimes meant that our route took us the wrong way down one-way streets that were possible if you were in the cycle lane, but otherwise dodging traffic - at these times, the cycle lane seemed to have a separation barrier that stopped us jumping back into them…..
Quite quickly we went out of the elegant and gracious belle epoque area of San Sebastian, past the surfing beach, to the working class port area, which for my money is still interesting, and retains lots of picturesque elements of the early fishing and boat building era. A port from which Lafayette sailed to help George Washington fight the British, apparently.
Our first ferry trip of the day took us on a 5 minute trip from the port area of San Pedro to the village of Donibane, with its lovely old houses clinging to the cliffs. Victor Hugo lived near the boat landing at Donibane for a while. The ferry is a small boat, that can take pedestrians and a few bikes at a time and costs 1.60 euro per person+bike. For that, you get to lift your bike into the boat - luckily a fellow passenger helped us get the heavy bikes onto and off the boat!
After a walk through the village of San Pedro with its cobbled streets, it was time to take the road to France!
Our route took us on the coastal road over a significant hill which is also a reserve - bypassing the highways and major roads of the main routes to France. Very quiet today, with a couple of military convoys passing us (front and rear landrovers with flashing lights, with trucks and Humvees between) in either direction, and lots of sportifs doing their morning rides. Also saw lots of walkers too.
On the way down we stopped to cool the brakes and to see the little chapel of Guadeloupe, which was part of the old fort area.
We took a look around our last Spanish town of Hondarribia, before embarking on another little ferry taking across the watery border to France at Hendaye.
Now in France, we picked up the EuroVelo 1 cycle route, The route travels the length of Western Europe going down the Atlantic Coast from north to south, taking in six consecutive countries: Norway, the UK, Ireland, France, Spain and Portugal.
As usual, this means signage linking local bike paths, minor roads and sometimes busy roads into some kind of cohesive whole, so it is a mixed bag, and the last bit of the ride into Ciboure was on a busy road with lots of fast traffic. It was sometimes too dangerous to try and stop and take a picture, as there were longish stretches without verges. The traffic was impatient this afternoon, and not as courteous as Spanish drivers either! Though no-one beeped or shouted abuse at us - take a lesson Australia!!
Ciboure is lovely, and so is our accommodation tonight - with its view over the town of St Jean de Luz and its pool!. Shopping for tea brought home that we were no longer in Spain, as things here are significantly more expensive!
