Since the weather was very very unseasonably warm(near summer temperatures) and since there were some strong storms expected late evening I left a bit early. I rode most of the rest of the roads in Woodbury just at dawn and made good time south before the wind picked up. I took my road bike and the route was mostly paved so I was moving fast.
I rode through Manchester and up along the spine of the mountain on 190 but the views were obscured due to a little bit of fog. Stopped for the first time in Shiloh and got going fast. Next was series of fast, quiet and fun paved roads leading south to Mulberry Grove. I made another quick stop at a gas station for more fluids since I had a bit to go till another stop and it was very hot. Also I only have two bottle mounts on the road bike. Did a bunch of subdivisions amidst the northern Columbus fringes which included exploring some brand new roads just laid out.
Riding back north with the wind was very nice, and I rode up and over the mountain again to the Man o War trail and by the time I got to Pine Mountain I was pretty thirsty and hungry. So I overbought food a bit but left feeling good about finishing without another stop. The miles leading to Greenville and north were very very fast due to being on the road bike and a very good tailwind. The weather was oppressively hot for early march, low to mid eighties and humid. There were a few clouds but not enough to make much difference till later in the afternoon. Since it is early March though, thankfully by late afternoon the sun was at a lower angle and things cooled off a bit.
On the gravel portion of Rocky Mount road I got a tiny sidewall puncture in my rear tire despite taking things as easy as possible. I noticed early, put a plug in and more air and it held well the rest of the ride. The remaining miles through Senoia went very fast for me riding back in after a long ride. I had a bit of a 2nd wind plus the tailwind was nice.
