Cold start and it stayed chilly all day despite the sun coming out halfway through. After last night's rain the roads were filthy in the morning, and after giving Bess a thorough clean and lube yesterday all that work was undone in the first 35 miles. Rode through six floods in the first bit leading to the Surrey Hills. Rode with a chap called Richard (from Kingston) from the lake across Plough Lane to the top of Staple Lane where we parted company. Went through Farley Green, forgotten I'd planned that part of the route - very different from last summer, now filthy. Stopped near Dunsfold at 11 for two minutes' silence. Roads gradually dried up over the afternoon. My drivetrain was covered in much and the lube had mostly been washed from the chain, with the result that every pedal stroke from 35 miles on had a lot of resistance and lots of friction, making every pedal stroke an effort, which I found very wearing. Overall a nice route. Stopped at Laleham (94 miles in) for a well-earned cider and crisps before the last few miles home.

Well done. The weather did look nice later, but as you said the roads were really dirty. I popped down to Box Hill in the morning and the bike was covered. Saw three or more people stopped with punctures. Flood across road in Walton-on-the-Hill. Try Squirt Lube - James Lee put me on to it, works really well http://www.wiggle.co.uk/squirt-chain-lube/
