My initial 2015 bike ride began at 7:30 a.m. when the temperature had dipped to a shivering 71 degrees Fahrenheit. It did warm up, though, to a comfortable 79 degrees F. (Please know that I’m joking) Anyway, this being the first day of the year, everyone that I came in contact with along the bike trails seemed to be in a jovial mood. Let’s hope they remain that way throughout the year. The 25-mile trail and sidewalk ride was basically uneventful, exceptionally beautiful with all the flowers in full bloom, but uneventful just the same – that is until ½ mile from the end of the ride – at which time I noticed several blue and red lights blinking just ahead alongside the South New River Canal that runs between Orange Drive and Griffin Road in the City of Davie, FL. That could mean only one thing; an emergency situation is right up the road. Sure enough, there was an emergency. A white car had driven off the road, landing right side up in the canal. And from what I understood from several bystanders, the police and emergency personnel had already determined that a deceased body, or bodies, was still inside the sunken vehicle. However, they could not extract the vehicle and body/bodies until the crime scene personnel completed their investigation. Not surprising, alongside the south side of the canal were several local news agencies with cameras rolling. There were also hordes of gawking bystanders, some of them road cyclists that happened upon the scene as I had. Not wanting to be a typical merciless gawker, I continued my ride until I arrived at my wife’s place of employment, at which time I placed the mountain bike on the truck’s bike rack and then headed home. With the exception of the vehicular fatality, my first ride of 2015 was very pleasant.
