The roads W and NW of the park were way too busy for Sue's tolerance and my comfort. It seems they are used by residents and business travel as a bypass around Tucson. Oncoming vehicles appeared every 30 seconds and many times in groups of 4 or so. Overtaking vehicles appeared every 2 to 3 minutes. There was no shoulder for much of the road length. So we tried the unpaved roads inside the NP. They were dry. They were pretty well graded but a little more washboarding than comfort allowed. There were several sections about a mile or so each with a layer about 3/4" with very small, loose pebbles that made propelling (and steering) the tandem on 700cx30 tires a real workout. The scenery was gorgeous, the solitude was great and the wildlife was present.
