Starting from Pasadena, riding out past Encanto and up the CA-39 to Islip Saddle, then on up to Dawson Saddle before reversing direction and taking CA-2 all the way to La Canada. From there, returning to the start in Pasadena. Very windy with strong gusts which caused us to be peppered by sand, dirt, etc., in the area of Morris Reservoir. Strong gusts continued, but not as violently the rest of the ride. From high up the CA-39 looking back, the area at the mouth of San Gabriel Canyon looked like a dust bowl, but from up there the air was very clear, and there was a good view of the ocean. CA-2 was closed from Islip Saddle towards Dawson Saddle, and there were lots of rocks on the road, so bad in places that we were obliged to walk our bikes through the mine field. There were also spots with ice on the road which had to be negotiated carefully; in fact, there was a fairly broad patch of ice on the closed section of CA-39 which we had to walk across very carefully, and TJ's and my feet were slipping on the ice. No flats, though, so I'll consider that we were lucky. It was unseasonably warm at the start and while riding the lower sections of CA-39, but the temperature got down to 37F around the middle of the closed section of CA-2. The temperatures were plenty warm by the time we made it to Newcombs if you were moving. All around, a fun day of riding. However, I somehow managed to have my Garmin turned off for about a third of the ride, and missed recording what may well have been my fastest ever descent to Foothill from Red Box. I had a truck and a red Camaro pull over to let me go by! LOL
I deleted the end of this gpx track from the point the Garmin stopped recording, and have saved as a separate file the missing portion based on TJ's actual gpx track, and the last 5 miles from my original file.
