The whole route was brand new and pure exploration. These guys were lucky enough to join in my adventure! :)
If you haven't figured it out, there was a pretty big river crossing! I knew I was with the right group of people when they were all cool with doing it. Tons of fun today!
We started the ride off with plenty of navigation errors and ended up on the beach before hiking our bikes up the side of the bluff to get back to the trail.
What's the difference between hiking and gravel riding? On one of them you bring a bike. :)
Back on track, the first part of the ride along the bluff was so gorgeous and so pleasant.
Wilder Ranch was also really pretty. The climb up Wilder Ranch Loop was a really nice climb. Forest ahead of us and stunning views of the ocean behind us.
Once you get to the top, you cross Empire Grade and get on Chinquapin Trail. Flowing through the redwoods with beautiful shafts of light beaming between them. It was mine and many others favorite part of the ride.
After that was where it started to get technical. We descending U-Con Trail to get to Henry Cowell. It was a rooty single track. Too technical for Kathryn and I didn't know it was going to be like that.
So at the beginning of Rincon Fire Rd. at Henry Cowell, Kathryn decided, wisely, to do a road ride back to Santa Cruz to meet us at our coffee stop at Verve.
We continued on. It was so nice until we hit the river crossing. I had read that there were crossings but I didn't think they were going to be that big.
We couldn't even see where the trail was on the other side. John waded across the thigh deep river to scout for the actually crossing. He found it but then forgot his shoes on the other side and almost couldn't find them again!
We all made the crossing. The planned route was going to take us back to this crossing but we decided to change the route and exit the Campground Entrance and take the road back to meet Kathryn.
The first few climbs after the river crossing were super steep and heavy with leaf litter and loose rocks, probably because no one ever used the trail due to the river crossing.
Normally I think it would be climbable but it being so loose and rooty, we weren't able to go the whole way up and had to do some hike-a-bike.
I have to say, the trail signage in Henry Cowell isn't very good. We ended up missing our turn, not because we blew passed it, we stopped, but because there was signage for other trails and not the one we wanted to go on.
At the next turn, I thought we were at the turn we wanted to be at and ended up going the wrong way. We ended up exiting from the Park Entrance at the north instead of out the east.
NBD, we descended Hwy 9 to Santa Cruz, saw Kathryn briefly before she took off. Maya and Mike also had to take off so it was just Katrin, Stephanie, John, and I left to tackle the ride back.
Emma McCrary was a pretty nice climb back up to U-Con. It was also single track but I don't remember seeing anyone else on it. The climb up U-Con wasn't bad but we did encounter MTBers coming down.
The rest was gravy. Back through Chinquapin for another beautiful time. And then pretty much downhill all the way back to the cars.
Baldwin Loop Trail was pretty rocky and steep in sections. More technical than I thought it was going to be.
Baldwin Loop is a pretty wide fire road. Towards the bottom we had a run in with an older guy intentionally being a dick. There was a clean, single track line, on the right that we were riding. The rest of the trail was just grass, not even tall but the guy was walking on the trail and felt like he owned it. He stood in Stephanie's way and sort of forced her into the bushes on the side of the road. I was next through and he just stood his ground.
I can't remember what I said to him exactly, something to the effect of what the hell? What's your problem. We had an exchange.
I wish I had thought of this at the time. I should've said, "Even with a trail this wide, it's still not wide enough for your fat ass!"
The afternoon was so nice, warm and wind-free, that Katrin took her kayak out into the ocean.
Stephanie, John, and I went for tacos in Davenport instead! :)

Best format for turn-by-turn directions on modern Garmin Edge Devices
Best format for turn by turn directions on Edge 500, 510. Will provide true turn by turn navigation on Edge 800, 810, 1000, Touring including custom cue entries. Great for training when we release those features. Not currently optimal for Virtual Partner.
Useful for uploading your activity to another service, keeping records on your own computer etc.
Useful for any GPS unit. Contains no cuesheet entries, only track information (breadcrumb trail). Will provide turn by turn directions (true navigation) on the Edge 705/800/810/1000/Touring, but will not have any custom cues. Works great for Mio Cyclo. Find GPS specific help in our help system.
