Rode with Bob, Sonny, Doug, John, Marc, and Shawn. Day started of warmer than expected but got pretty cold once we climbed up to the top of the ridge. The mass start took forever to get going. 6.7mi in someone crashed in front of Bob. I narrowly avoided going into the back of him. Bob unfortunately went down. Two other people were involved - the guy that started it and a woman who went down and lost a tooth. OUCH!
Up until that point we weren't taking it easy but we did afterward. The first couple climbs really weren't that bad but on the way up King Ridge we got rained on. It was also windy and foggy up there. From mile 35-45 my legs started to cramp. They weren't tired but I think the cold was affecting me. I also started to get very hungry and bonked a little. Oddly, I got a second wind even though I didn't eat until the next rest stop.
The descents were a little tricky. One was in dense fog. Most were wet, sometimes raining and people just don't know how to descend. There was an accident at the bottom of one the steep technical descents.
After the lunch stop my cleats were filled with mud and it took forever before I could get going. That meant everyone left without me and I was stuck riding the windy coast basically by myself. It didn't help that I was pretty tired at that point.
The climb up Coleman Valley wasn't great. It was steep and long and at first my legs were starting to cramp but then both my knees started to hurt pretty badly.
The last 10mi, the guys were HAMMERING. I was killing myself to keep up but I did manage to despite the way I felt.
For some reason my elevation is short by about 1000'. Don't know why.
All in all, I was in more pain and difficulty than I was expecting. At least the bike felt good.
