On the final day of our journey we awoke to the sound of a steady rain falling around us at the campground near Arlington. It had rained most of the night so it wasn’t too surprising. We packed up as quickly as possible and pedaled back towards the town of Arlington where breakfast awaited at the Blue Bird Cafe, a greasy spoon that provided the ideal menu options on a wet, cool morning. After fueling up we jumped on the Centennial Trail which ran right through town and headed south towards our final destiation. The rain had subsided, but fallen long enough to encourage most of the locals to stay home and skip their Saturday morning bike ride, so we had the trail nearly to ourselves. As usual, we had a planned stop ahead which unsurprisingly included croissants and coffee in the town of Snohomish. When we arrived the sun had broken through the clouds and the town was alive with weekenders, rag tops down, sandles on and some even with shirts off. It was 58 degrees! From Snohomish the route took us back onto local roads for about 14 miles, many of which had little or no shoulder and with the traffic building required a bit more nerve to navigate but before long we were back onto the bike trail, this time the Sammamish River Trail. The nervousness of the roads we’d just departed had now been replaced by a fair to midland degree of mayhem on the trail as nearly all imaginable types of trail-goers had made their way out to enjoy the afternoon. Due to the added attention required our pace was slowed a tad but still we made our way to the Zoka Coffee Shop just a few minutes later than planned where Sidney was patiently waiting to join us for yet another coffee. The final 15 miles or so were spent marveling at the city sights and sounds, reflecting on the miles behind us, and yes, anticipating what our next adventure might be.
