Lovely, isolated long ascent that is 50% paved - Oklahoma road from Willard to the Oklahoma Campground - An easy to miss left turn onto NF-86 at km 29 just before crossing the Little White Salmon a 4th time turns to a muddy, potholed flat road. Then the gradient kicks up as the switchbacks start on a pretty nice gravel road with a few minor washouts that mostly affect autos as the gradient increases on the gravel portion. Southern views of Oregon's volcanos are present on the south facing switchbacks. Then a traverse from Trail Peak along 6610 over to Route 66 yields a view of Klickitat (Mt. Adams) Turning south though the lava tube area for a screaming long descent back toward Willard the gravel road widens. There is actual traffic on NFSD 66. Pavement starts up again. Then only climb on the return is a brief segment from Chenowith road on the Underwood-Cook road up Underwood mountain. The views aren't bad over the Columbia River of the Hood River Valley. For me it was a casual 4 hour ascent and a 2 hour return.
