Started last (by about 6 min.) and stopped a block later to help a participant who broke his chain. I stopped a second time after about 5 miles to wait on a guy who was fixing his flat tire for the second time; his first tube failed for an unknown reason. By that time, I was about 30 min. behind.
Ragged Point was the half-way mark, and I left there with only 6-8 riders ahead of me. I made it back to SLO about 15 min. after the lead group of 4 guys working together had left. I did not push the last 70 miles, particularly not the last couple of hours, in order to save my legs should I have tried to ride Mt. Figueroa the next day (I didn't). So I was the 5th to finish overall.
I felt low on energy from the very start of the ride, which I think was because I only had a slight dinner (fish sandwich and onion rings from Jack's while on the road), and a slight breakfast (a Slimfast protein drink). I had just under 4 hours of sleep, but that is not unusual for me before a big ride. (Would that I'll learn better one day....) Consequently, while I was eating energy bars; stopped in Cambria for a sandwich for lunch; drank Coke and Mtn Dew along the way; and ate a meal of lasagna and macaroni and cheese at the SLO control (with 75 mi to go), I often felt I was on the brink of bonking, and actually did bonk with about 9 miles to go when I had figured I could make it in for more macaroni 'n cheese, lasagna, and PIE. Vickie had an assortment of pies for PI day! LOL
The route is exceptional, and the weather and views were great. A new stretch of road for me which was awesome was San Marcos Rd upon leaving San Miguel heading SW. We were through the inland part of the ride before it was too hot; it was quite comfortable along the coast.
Some spots had amazing displays of wildflowers.
