The ride started in Gloucester County and went South into Salem County, destination Marshalltown (aka Frogtown), which is discussed in Dennis Rizzo's book Parallel Communities as an African American settlement established before the Civil War in a swampy area (ideal for hiding from slave-catchers) near Salem NJ, a Quaker town near the Delaware Bay, which was navigable for bringing escaped slaves out of Delaware and Maryland (slave states) and into New Jersey. All that remains of Marshalltown is the AUMP church (pics) on Roosevelt Avenue off Marshalltown Road. Also pictured is an eagle in a tree by water, the closed Becket Golf Club, and the 400 year-old cabin in Gibbstown, said to be the oldest remaining structure in New Jersey. Saw my first corn plants of the season; corn as high as a rabbit's eye. And this was the first time this year I used sunblock. I recommend NOT riding on Auburn Rd on the stretch below Center Square Rd - narrow, no shoulder, plus (currently) new-home development construction work. It is fine after a mile or two. I saw many other cyclists, some in groups, and I did not see one with a facial covering (I had one that I pulled into place when encountering other people). I rode the Spec Roubaix (my A bike). Winds N 12 mph.
