Day 1 (half day): 29 Palms to Sheephole Valley Wilderness. Spent a fair amount of this first day getting the frame storage dialed.
Day 2: Sheephole Valley Wilderness to the Preserve entrance, with lots of stops to admire the dry lakes and desolate flatness.
Day 3: Preserve entrance to the Kelso Dunes via lots of little detours around the Granite Mountains and Hidden Hill area. My first taste of how fun the off-road riding in the Preserve would be. Also hiked the sand dunes, which was maybe a somewhat misguided 'rest day' activity.
Day 4: Kelso Dunes to the Marl Mountains via a very sandy hill climb. Some pushing of the bike was involved toward the end...
Day 5: Marl Mountains through Cima Dome and up to a resupply at the Shadow Valley I-15 rest stop, then back to the Cinder Cone lava beds. Almost a loop, but with a climb+descent in the first half and relatively flat riding in the second. The last bit, with lots of cinder cones littering the road, was somewhat challenging in the dark.
Day 6: Cinder cone lava beds to the Providence Mountains via Mojave Road. Mojave Road is popular with 4wd-ers (one group of which kindly let me charge their phone and gave me a beer!) and I can see why--lots of fun bumps and interesting terrain challenges, and beautiful views.
Day 7: Providence Mountains over Foshay Pass to Clipper Valley and all the way back to 29 Palms. Foshay Pass had one short, steep hill that was a little sketchy to push the bike up due to the looseness of the sand and gravel... The descent was the most technical of the trip (though still probably pretty chill by 'real' mtb standards!).
