My original intent was to ride the Pistol Hill Loop counterclockwise on a solo ride. It was a casual ride that eventually warmed up to pleasant low 60s degrees; I stopped a few times trying to catch a photo of the jets flying overhead in formation on some sort of flight training exercise. Once I neared the summit of Pistol Hill Road I was drawn to turn up Colossal Cave Road which climbs south on crappy asphalt. Since I was alone, I decided it was a good time to satisfy my curiousity about the road that I've had for some time, thinking it would end on dirt road & I would return back to my original route. Althoug there was a locked gate about 2 miles in it continued toward the Mountain Park which is accessable via the extention of Old Spanish Trail Road. After being scoped out by a Pima County Sheriff I continued onward and eventually came to the official entrance to the Colossal Cave Mountain Park entrance. From there I returned home on the planned route.
