The ride started early with Stacy and a leisurely jaunt to the Ferry Building in San Francisco - BART service under the bay was cancelled for the weekend. We arrived in Jack London Square early so we rode around the waterfront for a while. Soon we headed over to the Beerside PBP Recon event at Pacific Coast Brewing Company with a bunch of SFRs. From there Stacy took the Ferry home and I BARTed/rode to the start control in Hercules.
Seventeen of us rolled from the start right as the sun was setting so we had a beautiful view from the bridge crossing the Bay into Vallejo. I rode with Yogy, Brad, Kaley (fixed) and BrianF, mostly, to the turn around at the Safeway in Davis. I took my time with sushi and a beer while everyone else came and went. I was Lanterne Rouge by the time I left Safeway for the return home.
I hammered a bit when I saw the tail lights of Juliayn, Mike and Mike up ahead in the distance. I eventually caught up to them. A while later we caught up to Kaley and Manny. I was having a hard time keeping up with them on the flats so I backed off a bit and did my best to fight the drowsiness; it was, oh, around 02:00 I think.
Eventually we made it to Cordelia - that stretch was the lowpoint of the ride for me. I had kept the group within sight but didn't feel like being social. 7-11 was someone's choice for the open control here. The guy in the store was very accommodating, getting us checked out with receipts very quickly and opening the bathroom for us. While others ate and fiddled I lay down on the sidewalk for a cat nap. Soon I was awakened by Juliayn asking if I was alright; yep, a-ok. We rolled out together.
We were finally out of the flats and on to the rollers leading to Lake Herman. The coffee, snacks and climbing perked me up and soon I had lost sight of the others behind me. I was feeling better as the clock approached "morning" so I pressed on, happy to fly through Vallejo in the early hours with very few cars and still in the dark.
First light came as I approached the bridge. It was setting up for a nice sunrise as I crossed it, no other riders to be seen except for a couple of what I'm assuming were commuters heading in to Vallejo.
It was a pleasure screaming down the hill past the refinery this time; last time I was here, for the SF Dart, we were pedaling into a nasty headwind on the descent.
It was nearly full-light by the time I reached the finish control where I saw Yogy, BrianF and Rob. Craig was there working the finish control with pastries and drinks. I kept the stop there short to keep from cooling down too much. I still needed to ride back to the BART station in Del Norte and eventually catch a Ferry to SF and then the final ride across the City and home.
