I was trying to decide between riding the Tarmac or the Thesis and went with the Tarmac because it was lighter. But right away on OLH, I realized I should've gone with the Thesis for the lower climbing gears.
It was supposed to be a little chilly everywhere but Felton, which was going to be hot. I decided to dress for Felton and I think that was a mistake because I was cold most of the day.
Everyone was late to meet at OLH except me. I thought I was at the wrong spot. We took it nice and easy up the climb.
The descent down W. OLH and 84 was fun. At one point we came upon an accident. A Porshe Boxster that had crashed. There were firemen getting us to slow down, which we did but there was still a jerk cop that yelled at us.
We stopped at the La Honda Store for a snack and to pick up some tequilla to help Catherine climb later on. :)
We took it easy up Haskins and bombed the descent. Really all the descents today were super fun. The climbs, not so much.
When we reached Hwy 1. Robin realized her Wahoo only had 8% charge left. I guess it didn't charge properly the night before. We tried finding a battery at the gas station but they didn't have what she needed unfortunately.
We had an amazing tailwind down Hwy 1. We stopped at Swanton Berry Farms for a snack and then headed down to Bonny Doon. We took it easy up Bonny Doon but with my gearing, I wasn't really spinning and I think that was going to hurt me later. Towards the top, my legs weren't feeling great. We were only halfway into the ride and I wasn't sure how I was going to do the second half.
I had a clean run descending Felton-Empire - no cars. This was only my second time and I remember loving the descent so much the first time, I've been wanting to come to do it for a while.
We stopped in Felton for lunch then it was on to E. Zayante. I haven't done that climb in years. I just remember it has some really steep pitches. On the first one, I felt the first twinges of cramping in my legs begin. By the time I was at the top, I was in pretty bad shape.
Summit and Skyline after climbing up to the top of the ridge always seems to suck and today was no different. I really struggled and along Skyline it started to get cold. I had to manage my legs for a while as they were ready to cramp and eventually I had to stop as my legs were about to seize up. It was the perfect time to put some layers on.
I limped to Castle Rock where we had our last rest stop. Robin gave me some Reese's Peanut Butter Cups and miraculously I bounced back.
Descending Page Mill was super fun. Got caught behind three slow vans and SUVs. I ended up passing them all so I could continue my bombing run. I didn't realize at the time but Joshua was cheering me on with each pass. :)
Catherine, Joshua and I decided to do some #roadbikesoffroad through Arastradero to shorten our ride. Noah, Julien, Brian ended up continuing down Page Mill.
Once we got to Alameda de las Pulgas, it was just a headwind. Catherine and I parted ways and I just limped home. At one point this enthusiastic, shirtless dude asked if he could chase me. I told him I was at mile 113 with 10.5K' of climbing and wasn't going to be going very fast. So he offered to let me draft him. It worked great except for the fact that he was swerving around and aiming at parked cars. He also ran the stop signs and nearly got himself run over. I gladly let him go... not that I could've caught him anyway.
My knee started to hurt a little not long after. The last climb up Ralston was all about grit and determination.
Extra kudos to Catherine who rode strong right until the end. I honestly didn't think I was going to crack today, let alone crack so badly. I'm so lucky I was able to bounce back otherwise the last 30 miles would've sucked!
