Got started relatively early but just after sunrise, and in a few miles came upon the Georgia Guidestones. As it was Monday morning I had it to myself.
At length I arrived at the Fork cemetery where I needed to find some relatives. I searched for about 15 minutes before I finally noticed them all completely overgrown with 6ft high saplings. I had no saw so I cleared what I could with my bare hands. You couldn't even tell there were graves there before, and after some sweat I managed to either pull up or break off every tree in their little fenced in area. I must have pulled up 100 vines too. But now they're visible, my 5x great grandparents who were born before this country declared independence. The huge oak tree that towered over half of the cemetery had to be at least that old, it rivalled the one I recently saw in Habersham.
Job done there I conveniently rolled downhill about a mile to Watson Mill bridge state park where I washed up and got some water. I sat by the river for a time and read at a picnic table, enjoying the nice day.
I had thought I could take a side road out of the park but it turned out to not be a thing, as the bridge had been out for a very long time. Perhaps 30 years. It was still up though it was only a shell with no decking. Imagine the burned bridge in Meriwether county that only has the steel rails, except it was 10 times as long and 5 times higher. And had trees growing through it. So that was a no go which just meant a bit more highway miles. So after this, for awhile I was on either highways or straight and fast back roads and I began to yearn for a quiet gravel road. I was cursing myself for routing myself this way, and cursing the county for paving and straightening the roads. I stopped at a store in Crawford and after that things got a lot better. I was on gravel pretty much the rest of the route other than some town riding I did in Maxeys, a really neat tiny town. They have paved about a mile of their old railroad through town and had a sign up advertising it as a test mile for something called the Firefly trail which would continue all the way to Athens 26 miles away.
I continued on until I reached the Town Creek OHV area in the Oconee National Forest and didn't really have an idea of where to camp until I stumbled onto something called the Roberts Bike Camp. It's actually for dirt bikes. Gravel parking surrounded by some flat grass, bear proof trash cans and a pit toilet. I opened the door to check it out and it had about 100,000 mosquitoes inside. So I set my tent up all the way on the other side of the clearing.
