Got up earlier than my usual laziness because I knew I needed to accomplish a lot of things this morning and also outrun the storm till I got to a suitable place to camp. First thing, since I didn't get to camp till dark, was to find my one direct ancestor in the cemetery next to where I camped. Found him right away, snapped a photo and got going. On to the next cemetery. I somehow completely blew by the turn but got back on track, US 1 right there is completely unnecessarily built up, the traffic was almost non-existent. About a tenth the traffic of Peachtree Parkway back home, but with 4 wide, separated lanes and a giant shoulder. Brushed off the old graves there, snapped some photos and got going again.
For most of this trip I have been super lucky in that I keep chasing tailwinds with every major route direction change. But this morning my bill finally came due and I mostly had a strong headwind. But I felt pretty good. Had been riding the first 20 miles with only a half liter of water, just waiting on a church. Stopped at Sweat baptist church and filled up with city water from Waycross. You could taste the hint of sulfur in it. I can choke it down no problem but I do miss the water from the mountains.
Got super turned around when I had to go way off my route to avoid a stopped train. Eventually got back on track, around the train, and up to the city cemetery. Found my Great Grandparents pretty fast considering how huge it is and all I had to go on was my parents description that it was by the 4 lane highway and near the front. And it certainly was, and there even was a working faucet right there. Took my photos and got going. Stopped at the local Kroger, spoke to a Waycross native also getting groceries by bike. Waycross is a pretty cool place. Lots of unique houses set in a nice and tidy grid. The streets seemed deserted of cars although the houses appeared to be well kept. Almost no one was out enjoying the lovely, pre storm morning though.
Eventually I rode on a few miles down a deserted dirt road to find the boundary of Dixon Memorial WMA and State Forest. Which is next door to Laura S Walker state park. I found a suitable spot not near any widowmakers and set up my tent to wait out the storm.
